Family Reunion

As I write this, my dad, myself and my brother are in the second family living room, the only men in the senior Akinyemi family. What I find most amusing is that all three of us are completely oblivious of what the other is doing… except myself. We are all holding laptops in front of us, and extremely focused on what we are doing.

No doubt the world is moving forward, and none of us is staying behind. I love my parents, and I celebrate them. They have refused to be lost in old times, they have email addresses, log into the net by themselves, know how to trade forex and keep themselves abreast of what the world is doing, in their own little way. They won’t be living us with a huge inheritance, but they’ve given us more than we could ask, they’ve given us values, education and time. That’s sufficient to start a continent with.

You don’t need to pray to live long, just honor your parents.(honor your father and your mother, that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth, this is the first commandment with promise) You don’t need to beg, pray or work 24/7 to become wealthy, just give to the poor(he that gives to the poor lends to the lord, and he will surely repay). The universe runs on principles,it’s no respecter of persons. Being the best Doctor in the world does not make gravity favor you if you mistakenly fall off a skyscraper. Principles have no respect for degree, pedigree or antecedents, the principles respect only those who act understanding the effect of their actions and channeling it to work in their favor. This however is not a about principles in general, that’s for another day. Today it’s about your parents, can you remember that childhood story where all the animals were starving and encouraged each other to kill their parents so they could eat them, while the dog hid it’s own parents? Can you remember how that when they ran into problems, it was the dog’s mother that provided the solution from hiding? What have you done with your parents? “Alu janjan ki jan :) !” Continue Reading »

Do you have Core Values?

As you probably know by now, I’m an HR specialist. I have spent considerable time developing HR capabilities in myself, and in others. During my Human Resources Management Career, I have had the opportunity to be responsible for on-boarding new employees into different companies. These induction sessions are usually 2 days events where new hires (at whatever level) are intimated with the mission, vision, culture and values of the organization. These meetings are so much fun, people remember them much long after.

I remember traveling by air one day, many months after I had left my last employment. One of the Cabin Crew members walked up to me, and told me that the words I spoke during their induction still provided guidance and instruction even though I was long gone. I flashed back, and remembered, one of the topics I enjoyed facilitating the most in these inductions, was and still is core values. Continue Reading »

Are your eyes on the Future?

Please read only if you are convinced that you want to truthfully answer the question above.

“It is impossible to teach a man what he thinks he already knows” – Epicelus

The world is transforming at an alarming rate, to stay relevant, people and organizations must be adaptable to change.

I vividly remember a course I was privileged to attend some months back on business modeling. It was facilitated by a French man I have grown to respect, I learnt a lot of things, I also learnt about some vital indices that further corroborate the fact that all organizations that will succeed in the future, must factor these elements into their business models. Ownership Paradigm

Today, I found myself asking one of the questions that undermines my personal paradigm of ownership. I asked the question, “whose fault is this, or who is to blame?” While this is a question that helps to understand the root cause of a problem, it’s also the first step in the blame game. Thinking that the problem originated from someone else, or by thinking we can make someone else responsible for the mishaps in our lives, we become irresponsible. We can trace the root of every problem back to ourselves. This might seem like being to hard on ourselves, but check it, you can’t change the world, but you can surely change yourself, and if you find an equation where changing yourself changes the world, then you have found a way to change the world. It’s like the lever principle; if the fulcrum is in the center and the weigh at the end, then the same amount of force needs to be exerted to raise the weight. The farther away the force applied is from the fulcrum, the lesser the force required to lift the weight. No wonder a scientist once said, “give me a place to stand, and I will move the world.” Focusing on ourselves and the things we can change within ourselves we can change the world.

In case you are wondering the circumstance that warranted this question, it was the explosion arising from the vandalized pipeline at Abule-egba. As of today the death toll is said to be over 700! Continue Reading »

Think Win-Win

“Free is a Mirage”-Adeolu Akinyemi

I don’t know where we got it from, but we love free things in this side of the world. We want gifts, we want unmerited favour, we want to get great Jobs, we want companies to sponsor our programs, we want people to show us affection, we want yearly promotions, we want to advance in our careers, to suddenly become better people, ALL FOR FREE!!!

If it’s a free seminar, 500 people can apply with 3 days notice! Believe me, I know from experience. We all love and enjoy the idea of getting something without paying for it. It has lured us to believe that great things come without a price…Don’t be caught in this belief, free is a mirage!

Every good and worthwhile thing you will get in this life, will cost you! The reason you are where you are today, is because that is what you have paid the price for. You need to give up to go up! The reason why companies will not support your program is because when they tune in to Wii-fm (Whats in it for me) they don’t get any signals. The reason your promotion is not coming is because your contribution is not making your boss considered for his next promotion, he/she has asked himself what value you are adding to his/her progress, and he cannot put his/her finger on it. The reason why that guy is showing you affection is not unconnected with what he believes he’ll get. The reason that other one is not, is because there is nothing you are doing that deserves attention. See, it’s simple as A-B-C, there is no free lunch. You need to pay a price for anything you want, or take it on credit. Free is a mirage. What you didn’t earn won’t last.

The difference between wishes and desires is that wishes place no responsibilities on you, they are free, they don’t have price tags. Desires however require a price. All your aspirations are mere wishes until you are willing to look critically at the price and negotiate for it.

We all love good things, all wish that things get better, but if wishes were horses beggers will ride. Many wish, few desire! All of us are willing to live in mansions, drive flashy cars, paint the town red and live large, but how many of us are willing to work hard, stay committed to our vision, wage through the waters of struggle, climb up the slopy sloppy mountains in pursuit of what only we see? How many of us are willing to brave insanity, form deafness, see things and proclaim waters in the desert? It’s not free my friend, growth has a price!

Start thinking win-win, how can I add value to the person I want to learn from? How can I secure a promotion for my boss? How can I propagate the gospel of the company that wants to support me? What am I doing today that makes me deserve what I desire? Let’s change our orientation, look at everything you are getting for free today, and start paying a price for them in cash or in kind. You’ll be shocked at how you’ll grow, at how the doors will fling open, at how you’ll advance. Your key to progress is seeking win win options with whoever has your next step around them? Check this out, even the God of the universe only hears prayers that have to do with His Will (Win). Since your prayer is supposed to be your win, even prayer needs to be win-win.

Roots

It’s often said, that the river that forgets its source will soon run dry. Every tree has its root, every river has a source. It is a bastard that uses his left hand to indicate the direction to his fathers house. These sayings are some of the proverbs that reveal the culture of a people, their values, belief systems, and essentially their way of life. Where are you from?

It’s so interesting to observe, that many African’s, and indeed Nigerians, either at home or abroad, have lost the sense of connection with their origins. Many years ago, many were carted away to occupy the vacancies for cheap labour that existed in the then developing world, they joined in adding their labour to the making of a developed society. For many of them it was painful, they resisted, they had little or no choice, like the spoils of war, like sheep led to the slaughter, they followed, enduring their cross with patience…and before you think too far, this is not about racism – there is nothing that has been done to the black man, that he did not do more to his kindred. It’s many years since then, and many African’s actually buy their own tickets and submit themselves once again, though in a more dignified way, to the development of other nations. Is it true that the prosperity of a river is sure for as long as it is conversant with it’s source? Are you in touch with your roots? Continue Reading »

The Smell of a Place -Brandfaces Article 002

The Smell of a Place

Let’s start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the monkeys with cold water. After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result – all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water.
Pretty soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.Now, turn off the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs.
To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted. Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. Note that the previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm. Again, replace a third original monkey with a new one. The new one makes it to the stairs and is attacked as well. Two of the four monkeys that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs, or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

After replacing the fourth and fifth original monkeys, all the monkeys that have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs. Why not? Because as far as they know that’s the way it’s always been around here and that’s how company culture is formed, and that’s how you come about the smell of a place.

Every company has its smell. It’s the way it’s always been around there. Nobody can really explain why some things are the way they are anymore, it’s either that’s what management said, wants or expects. This subtly defines a culture for the organization. Imagine how the fifth monkey would have felt when it entered the cage, he’ll see opportunities all over the place in “banana’s untouched”, he’ll wonder in its mind why nobody is making use of those opportunities, he’ll also wonder how come the hostility when he tries to reach the banana. The other monkeys will attack it with glee, without having a clue why things are done that way. At that point, the one who can pick the smell of the place most is the new comer, but he/she looses the ability to see the difference in sometimes less than 3 months.

The smell of some places
Where do you work? Do you work in a hostile, high-pressure, cubicle-laden owner-centric labor camp with lousy benefits, bitter, talentless managers, and buzzing, green-tinted fluorescent lights? Or do you work in an open, airy, truly stylish converted warehouse with relaxed, competent coworkers and managers that not only care about your well-being and job satisfaction, but work continuously to improve it? Do you to set your own hours, banish your suit and tie in the deepest corner of your closet, and bask in the creativity of well-humored individuals who actually come to work (and leave) in a good mood?

Do you work in a company that allows total freedom in managing your priorities, decorating your workspace, and provides solid health, dental, and financial benefits? Do you work in a place where you never, ever see another cubicle again? Where there is no big fish and hence no aquarium? Or do you work in a ‘do as I say’, no initiative required environment, where the boss takes all the decisions, your bosses are addressed as ‘royal highnesses’ and you are rewarded on your ability to stay forever on a particular job?

Companies are so different, and most times unexplainably so, but if you by chance find yourself in a company that has gotten used to a particular way of doing things, there are a number of things you can do to change the game or at least be happy.

How did we get here?
Ask questions. The most stupid question in the world is the one we never ask. That question that hangs on the tip of our tongue and never finds expression is the dumbest question. Ask! Find out a little about the history of the place. Don’t just join in a practice. Ask. The monkeys in the story did the things that they did without knowing exactly why. Dig a bit; find out the things that create the smell of where you are.

How do we smell today?
There are many ways to assess your company culture. There are consultants who will do it for you, for a fee (I can connect you ;-) . The easiest way to assess your company’s culture is to look around. How do the employees act; what do they do? Look for common behaviors and visible symbols. Listen. Listen to your employees, your suppliers, and your customers. Pay attention to what is written about your company, in print and online. These will also give you clues as to what your company’s smell really is. Your company can figuratively be a sweet smelling perfume, winning the hearts of customers, the passion of employees and the commitment of suppliers, or your company can be a stench, where employees hang around until they have a choice, suppliers are struggling businesses and your customers haven’t found alternatives.

What is our essence?
It’s also crucial to know what you stand for as a company. To consistently act in a manner inconsistent with our values and inner beliefs is another definition of insanity. Every company has an identity, a persona, a corporate culture. Corporate culture is a broad term used to define the unique personality or character of a particular company or organization, and includes such elements as core values and beliefs, corporate ethics, and rules of behavior. Corporate culture can be expressed in the company’s mission statement and other communications, in the architectural style or interior décor of offices, by what people wear to work, by how people address each other, and in the titles given to various employees. You need to be able to explain or describe the personality of your company.

How do you want your company to smell?
This is a two sided question, the top executive can ask this because he/she might want to change it, the freshman may ask this because he/she wants to consider and weigh his/her job options. Whichever side of the coin you fall in, you should have an idea what you want your corporate culture to be. Before you can change the company culture, you have to decide what you want the company culture to look like in the future. Different companies in different industries will have different cultures. Look at what kind of a culture will work best for your organization in its desired future state. Review your mission, vision and values and make sure the company culture you are designing supports them.
Here are some characteristics of company cultures that others have used successfully. Decide which work for your company and implement them, or on the other side of the coin, look for them.
