I Missed You!

In the 5years plus I have been active on this blog, the last 8 weeks have marked my longest time away from this blog. My friends, fans, acquaintances, critics and stark enemies on this site have become a vital part of my life and existence. To tell you that I have missed you over the last 8 weeks, would be to summarize it and lose much of the meaning of those words. Every 2-3 days, I have had the urge to write something. I have wanted to stay in touch, to chronicle my life and experiences as I would normally do, but it was just somehow tight for me. Trust me when I say my life has usually been filled with activity beyond the average, the last 8 weeks however have been a marathon of some sort for me. Please permit me to say quite warmly and affectionately, with traces of tears lacing my eyes, and my voice muddled and on the edge of crying – “I missed you, yes you…I have missed you!” Continue reading

So Much to be Grateful For

It’s 12:54am, 20th December, 2010. The year is coming close to an end, and it feels like just a few days ago that we said happy new year! The year has been quite eventful, we’ve made new friends, learnt new things, ventured into new opportunities and journeyed through varied experiences. There have been tough times, challenging seasons and great moments! There have been thoughts that crossed my mind, that I deliberately shut out, and there have been experiences I have savored way beyond the moment. He that thinks, thanks! I don’t know about you, but as I think about the last one week, and I think about the last 11 months, my heart wells up with gratitude, my face is flushed and my eyes teary. I’ve not had it all smooth, but there is so so much to be grateful for!

Can you think back and consciously find reasons to be grateful? Has it been worth it? You have a choice how you see the cup of your life. Half empty or half full is simply a game of perspectives. A failed attempt can be seen as one more way not to do it, or it can be seen as the basis for defining the time as wasted. Thinking back daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, there is so much to be grateful for.

Please count your blessings with me. Permit me to start from the base of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

1. Biological and Physiological Needs

For the basic needs of life – air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex and sleep, I am truly grateful. Those who have been denied of many of these are not worse in character or less than human. Some are on constant oxygen supply, many find it difficult to feed, many thirst and many do not have places to stay. To refuse to think that we are privileged is to take things for granted. I am grateful. Can you remember anything to grateful for?

2. Safety Needs

For the Safety needs of life -security, protection, order, law, limits, stability, e.t.c. I am truly grateful. My family and loved ones have been kept from harm. Financially, health-wise and physically, we have enjoyed security, we have traveled far and wide and have been kept safe and sound. Some are unsafe and insecure, we are not better than them. For these and other blessings, I am truly grateful. Can you remember safety needs met, to be grateful for?

3. Love and Belonging Needs

For my love needs in  life – family, affection, work group and relationships brought into my life, I am grateful! Nothing beats the chorus of “daddy”, “daddy”, “daddy”, when I get home, as my children compete for their hugs. Nothing beats hanging out with my wife for more than 14hrs everyday. Nothing compares with the A2W team, that surround me, and the relationships that this year has brought my way. In the area of love and a sense of belonging, I have a lot to be grateful for. What about you?

4. Esteem Needs

For the sense of worth and achievement bestowed on me in the course of this year, I am grateful. I am grateful for the awards, grateful for the achievements, the responsibility, the reputation and even the status bestowed on me. In the area of esteem needs, there is a lot to be grateful for. I am grateful, how about you? Mind you though, we are each motivated by the level we don’t yet have, so in case you have no esteem needs, be grateful that you have little or nothing to worry about.

5. Cognitive Needs

I am grateful for the hunger for knowledge that has driven me to read, to seek to know and to have a sense of meaning and of purpose. We talk so boldly and take it for granted, we have a sense of purpose, are driven to read and don’t see it as a big deal. There is so much to be grateful for, are you grateful?

6. Aesthetic Needs

For my personal growth and an increased appreciation of beauty, of balance and of form, I am truly grateful. I have been blessed with awesome sights, been thrilled by adrenalin pumping exercises. I have vacationed in different parts of the world, and enjoyed so many views, for these and more I am grateful. Do you now have reasons to be grateful?

7. Self Actualization Needs

For giving me the opportunities and the privileges to push myself towards achieving my God given potentials, I am grateful. I look at myself a year back, and I have learnt so much, and grown so fast it amazes me. “God, I am thankful”

8. Transcendence Needs

Nothing beats the feeling of hearing a “thank you” from someone you have labored to add value to and ensure turns out better than you. There is no greater joy than the joy that comes from pouring out yourself for others. Nothing equates with that feeling of rising to the height of ones personal potential and helping another person take the same journey. For the opportunities you have given me to help others become fulfilled, I am truly grateful. Are you grateful?

Make up your mind to enter into the new year with gratitude. If we think deeply enough, we can always find 5 things everyday to be grateful for. Once you can retain the attitude of gratitude, there is nothing big heading your way that will miss you. You will suddenly discover that you have become like a magnet for the things you desire.

N100 Internet!

It’s amazing how new great things happen and it somehow eludes many of us. I’ve been actively online on my own terms for about 5yrs now, within that space of time like many other people, I have tried all sorts. Having internet access is critical to personal development, almost all the answers you are looking for are available if you can search for it, the Achilles heels in Nigeria however has been internet access. One one side, you have costs, and on the other hand you have the challenge of functionality and coverage.

In the quest to have consistent internet access, or what I call internet-on-demand, I have tried! Multilinks, Starcomms, Glo, MTN, Zain, IPNX, Cobranet, DOPC, VSAT, Reltel, Oduatel e.t.c. Most of these I have personally owned, and interestingly still own and for the last two, I have tried out with friends. I also travel a lot, and have found some of the less reliable ones reliable in other places. I also use a blackberry, all to ensure that I’m always in touch, and always connected to the world. Afterall, you are the same person you were 5yrs ago, except for two things – New People and New Information. A few weeks ago, I got wind of some innovative price slash and re-bundling that MTN was doing. Looking at the details of what the new prices are, there is almost no reason today not to be in touch or be informed. Students, Workers, Job Seekers, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, Entrepreneurs of all shapes and sizes, now have an interesting deal, that may even set the pace for much more. Please find below an exciting price slash and innovative product bundle that is sure to delight many more. Continue reading

The India Experience

Traveling is higher education, and for me it was exciting to have been involved in the success story of 36 Nigerians who qualified for a 7 all expense paid vacation in India and an experience of the short-stay offer in Dubai. One politician once said, matter of factly that 50% of Nigerians will never get to the international airport before they die. While the statement sounds irritating, it’s falls short of the real numbers.  One of the reasons we are where we are is because our people don’t know better, and don’t demand for better. If you see countries like Dubai, you will know that we are almost indeed reduced as a country to a local government, but that’s not the story I want to share. I want to share the story of people, people like you and me, everyday people, who are living their dreams, and enjoying the time of their lives. Dare to dream, and dare to take the steps to make your dreams come true. We were all in India together, and took in the experience, let me take you to India via the eyes and experiences of those who journeyed. Continue reading

Lessons from the Road

“Last month’s winner was, Ikotun Adebisi, he wins a hosting account with nairahost and a pack of 200 minibooks to do with as he pleases – pls Join me in Congratulating him”

travel

I’m currently writing from somewhere under OAU Ife health sciences building, and it’s 1.01am. It’s been unduely long since I had internet access, and it’s alse been a long tiring day. I moved straight from the Aiport from Abuja to Ife, yesterday, and it was a very long  journey. I went in the company of a team of great people, My Wife (Temitope Akinyemi), Christian Love and Joshua Adeyemi. We set out from Lagos at 4pm only to arrive at OAU ife at after 2.00am in the morning. I’m greatly troubled for this nation, that what we have refused to solve collectively is beginning to hunt us individually. May we rise up and connect!

The journey was filled with loads of intruiges that culminated in a totally trapping situation when in the pitch dark night in the middle of nowhere, we suddently entered a ditch and lost two tires! We had only one spare tire and were trapped for sure, it was dark all around, and there was this sensing in the air, that if we waited too long where our tires went flat, we might  discover the people that are responsible for setting the trap if any. With two tires down and only one spare, we decided to keep moving on against all odds, and in that journey of 10hrs  (sufficient time to fly to the US direct). In that journey however, there are key lessons to learn and apply to life. Continue reading

I Wept – 2

tears1

Some of you were not reading this site back when I wrote “I wept”, and some of you were. If you are curious enough you can go over and read it. It makes an interesting read everytime I go back memory lane. Today’s article is however not a mere recap of why I wept back then. Today’s article is about why I wept today!

Just incase you don’t know, let me remind you once again, that I percieve my tears as precious. So precious that you are likely to find gold before you see tears in my eyes. I have discovered however, that while it might be difficult to share tears out of pain, I find myself getting moved and touched by care, concern and certain fundamental life issues.  Today I held back the tears without success, with a handkerchief in my pocket and ladies from different nations around me, I tried to play the man with a heart of steel, to watch and nod rather than allow my lacrimal glands take the day, but it happened again. Like Shakepsear said – “To weep is to make less the dept of grief”, I felt better after.

It wasn’t out of sorrow, thankfully, it was out of concern and compassion for people like you and I.  People like you and I who have the capacity to do a lot more than we are doing. People like you and I who have accepted the stereotyping of society. People like you and I who are bound for the grave with virtually all our talents and resources untouched and still loaded. People like you and I who are so quick and sharp with excuses, that we have become incapable of venturing into anything. While I listened, my heart melted, my siliva dried, my ears openned and I heard Gods’ voice in my ears, and my eyes gave way to warm tears. What happened? Follow me. Continue reading

Lessons from Egypt

There is so much to see about Egypt, interestingly there is so much to say as well. The Egyptian civilization is the oldest dated civilization. They have islands and temples that date back to 5000BC. Some of the sites are breath taking and some of the history, mind boggling. Egypt has managed to preserve a lot of it’s history, maximize the use of the Nile and  sufficiently diversify it’s sources of income.

One thing you cannot but notice about Egypt however is how grossly similar with Nigeria Egypt is. I have traveled to a few countries, but I’m yet to see so much similarity. Egypt also is a land so blessed, but it’s people so poor. When I listened to our tour guide describe Egypt, and the resources he knows that Egypt has, my mind wanders freely back to my country. I’m not every normal vacationer in Egypt, my eyes are covered with the lens of my nations transformation. Wherever I go, one this is on my mind – what as a Nation can we learn from these other countries to better the lot of our nation Nigeria? So, today, from the Land of the Pharaohs, from the land where life after death means more than life on earth, from the land of many temples and rich history, I bring you Lessons from Egypt!
