Developing a Competitive Edge
I’m going to be in Ife in the early hours of today, It’s late into the night already, and I’m trying to ensure that everything I’m supposed to do tomorrow doesn’t suffer for this outing. The program is being organized by NESA (National Economics Students Association), and the title of my talk is said to be Developing a Competitive Edge in a highly competitive world. The theme I understand is Entrepreneurship development.
I heard that Pat Utomi was there yesterday to speak with them, so was Gbenga Sesan. I don’t know if all this is deliberate (it wasn’t long I was privileged to speak with the same people few months back), but I’m going to be there later today. I need to bring out my posters and vie for the position of minister of education and entrepreneurship. (more…)

Hmmm… Now I need to make this perfectly understandable for people who haven’t watched season 1 of prison break -this 24 episodes attention grabber. Not being a series person myself, I got the entire season one from a friend. It’s one of those films one needs to get one’s personal copy of. I can bet that the person who wrote the script of this film didn’t have a clue where it would end when he started. It’s by every standard a masterpiece. And every chapter closes leaving questions on your mind.
I have spent close to an aggregate of 12hrs on this season one already and I’m very close to the end. It’s been very good for adrenalin, but more importantly, I have picked up some interesting life lessons, reinforced some personal beliefs, and I think I have something to share with you from this master piece. I’ve been inactive for a few days again, I am definitely going to find away around being very busy and writing at the same time. One of the key things that have kept me busy in the last few days is the topic above. The company I work for - Generis Solutions, trained the middle management staff one of the leading banks in Nigeria on - Maximizing Creative and Logical Thinking. It was a 2 days event, very intellectually stimulating and exciting for the participants, and very satisfying for the Generis Team.
In case you are wondering what kind of training this is, this is meant to give you a few of the insights into why this needs to be trained. The human brain does not think naturally, thinking is by conscious and deliberate effort. (more…)

I have been reading a book, titled “The brand called You”, it is a highly recommended book for anybody who wants to go into business. It is authored by Peter Montoya and Tim Vandehey. Interestingly I have not read any other of their books before, but I have read a book by Al Ries who forwarded their book.
The thought above is an excerpt from the book, interestingly though it was one of my first discoveries in business. This runs contrary to the non political belief system of an employee, afterall isn’t visibility politics? Reading through the book the statement struck me again, and thoughts flashed to mind, truely, visibility is more important than ability. (more…)

We all have these moments! Don’t feel like you are alone in the world for feeling tired, frustrated or fed up, there are those moments! But those moments don’t just come, they come for a reason. Everything that happens is either cause or effect, and believe me getting tired and fed up is not a cause, it’s an effect.

Late last year and early this year, I have been active in a number of carnivals. Canivals are organized by some blog owners as forums to post articles on specific topics. They select amongst a number of interested bloggers posts and post on the carnivals. Incidentally I have been opportuned to be featured in every carnival I submitted requests to.
Submitting posts to carnivals is one other way of increasing your site ranking and popularity. Doing this allows many of the people on the carnivals to see your site, see the quality of your articles and keep visiting. I have put all the canrivals here and I will update them as I get more. These carnivals also have many other great articles on related topics that are so very informative and useful. I’m looking forward to hosting one sometime soon too. Check these ones out and start participating in carnivals today. (more…)

Success comes from experience, and experience comes from failures. Hence it is a mathematically logical and correct conjecture to say that success comes from failures. I don’t know how that connects with you, but business titans world over seem to allude to that reasoning. In fact, IBM Thomas Watson (Jnr) once said that the secret of his success was to simply double his failure rate, and that the more he failed, the more he succeeded. You can even try this on for size;
“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is precisely why I succeed.” - Michael Jordan
Failure is a great teacher, but it is wiser to learn from other peoples experiences and failures than ones. Many mistakes have already been made and lessons learnt, no one will ever live long enough to make all the mistake by themselves.
“It is the ability to use another persons experience that makes the elders wise.” -Nigerian Proverb
People fail for similar reasons! Have you ever pondered about this? There is a quote I learnt in Organizational Design and Excellence. It states that organizations are perfectly designed for the results that they achieve. That means people continue to fail because there is a failure element in their design. How? (more…)

It’s the beginning of the year, and it’s the time many people get known for their new year resolutions. No more drinking, smoking, womanizing and so on. People conciously wish to stop their vices, to leave a better life, to do things differently. Everybody desires to move forward in their careers, to enroll in more personal development opportunities, to reach more clients in their businesses, to increase and grow. Everybody desires a better year, and at this time, people begin the year by making new year resolutions.
The interesting anomally with these resolutions however is that they remain a hype until mid January when they all fall like a pack of cards and get forgotten. By February, most people return to their normal lifestyles, the resolutions are lost, and the motivation with which the year was started gone! In case you have wondered why, and how this can be stopped, keep reading. (more…)

“Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.”-Thomas Alva Edison
Work is the horizontal flow of value from a supplier to a consumer! From this little definition of work, we can deduce that in order for what you are doing to be called work, there needs to be a transfer of value from you to someone else. Kindly note also that whether or not it’s for profit or for cash is omitted. This is because work does not become work only when it is rewarded, work is work as long as value is transfered. Like I usually say, experience is experience because you did it, not because you were paid for it. In the light of this definition, are you working? Who are you really working for? What value are you supplying? Look critically at the “work” you do, and be brutally honest with yourself, are you working? (more…)
