Tips to Becoming a Leader

“The hand of the diligent shall bear rule; but the slothful shall be put under tribute” – Proverbs 12:24 (KJV)

“Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor” – Proverbs 12:24 (NIV)

Interestingly this week, I have found myself in front of two different categories of gatherings and speaking on the same topic from two different perspectives. What I want to try to do today, is offer you the benefit of enjoying thoughts from both sessions.

The verse quoted above has never ceased to amaze me, the more I look at it the more seems to pop out at me from this statement. Interestingly when I ask people to task themselves and bring out 4 implied meanings of the sentence above, I actually get pleasantly surprised that people are able to look and actually see more than they also saw before taking a closer look. I’ll like you to pay rapt attention to this post, as the hidden details in the sentence above can set you on the pathway of success for the rest of your life.

Here are the things that are clear from the statements above Continue reading

Don’t Quit!

Are you experiencing any of these symptoms?

•    A compulsion to prove oneself
•    Working harder
•    Neglecting one’s own needs
•    Displacement of conflicts (the person does not realize the root cause of the distress)
•    Revision of values (friends or hobbies are completely dismissed)
•    Denial of emerging problems (cynicism and aggression become apparent)
•    Withdrawal (reducing social contacts to a minimum, becoming walled off; alcohol or other substance abuse may occur)
•    Behavioral changes become obvious to others
•    Depersonalization (life becomes a series of mechanical functions)
•    Inner emptiness
•    Depression

If you are experiencing any of these as symptoms, then you are approaching burnout. You need to quickly retrace your steps. You are in this business because you want to own your life, and enjoy your life, don’t let anything stress you out. Don’t allow anything to wear you out emotionally. Change your game!

Success Factors

A few years ago, I had the awe inspiring responsibility of being the Talent Supply Manager for one of the best companies to work for in the world. Shortly before I finished from university, I had stumbled on the name of the company in a book titled the best 100 companies to work for in America, so it was a desirable place for me. Unknown to me, I would go on, to be responsible for determining who gets in, and who does not in just a few years from reading the book. There were many things great about the company – It had at that time been in existence for over 165yrs, it had 110,000 employees worldwide, it invented quite a number of amazing products and concepts and more, but these are not the greatest things about the company. The greatest accolades that the company won were in 1. Quality of Talents that worked in the company and 2. Quality of Management, as evidenced by the fact that many of the other top companies ranking as companies to work for had their CEOs as alumni of this company. Continue reading

Who is Your Leader?

Last week Saturday, I had the rare privilege of an opportunity to speak at a Methodist Youth Convention in Oron, near Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The audience were young people from all over the nation, they numbered about a few thousands. It was talk-show styled. I was the only respondent on the talk-show, and I was being interviewed by a gentleman. The questions rolled after each other in quick succession, the questions seemed to have one goal in mind – to reveal the factors, the experiences and the environment responsible for bringing me to where I am today. My heart was moved in a heart felt prayer for these people, that they would start well, and finish strong. The same way today, my heart goes to every reader of this post. You will not be of them that run and do not win the prize, you will run and you will be victorious. Your purpose and dreams will not be cut shot. You will have a great story to tell, and your life and story will inspire your generation and generations unborn. You will live and not merely survive. You will impact your generation and not be distracted by the lure of a cyclic purposeless existence. Continue reading

Test Yourself

Nokia Answers: 1. C, 2. B, 3. A, 4. C, 5. D

Nokia C3 Winner: Adebowale Ojo (Based on Correct answers and timing)

It amazes me how many people live their lives on easy street. Ask them what they are doing currently, and the tell you about their work and daily commute, Seems uneventful, boring and typical. You ask what challenge they are facing, and the toughest they can come up with is the challenge of not having sufficient funds or something interesting that money quite easily solves. Nothing real, nothing mind racking.

Read this and understand – the easy road does not lead to greatness!  If greatness is your desire, you must be willing to change your current direction. The path of least resistance is a crooked path, if you want to blaze trails and be a leader, you have to be comfortable with rough roads. If you want to be an overcomer, you have to overcome. No examination, no promotion! If you want to get to the next level, life needs to put you in exam mode or you need to test yourself! Continue reading

As I write this post, I’m in a taxi in Nasarawa. We’ve been journeying together with a few colleagues from Jos, heading towards Abuja. It’s almost 8pm and I’m 2 days behind my normal plans. I’ve had two cancelled flights by two different airlines in two days. The pot seems black, but I have learnt from time, that the white corn jelly [eko funfun] usually proceeds from the black pot of life.

Wherever, however, whenever, great things come from small, hopeless or ugly beginnings. In the midst of it all, I’m getting cozy with my blackberry and, I have a message for you! Continue reading

How to Expand Your Business

This was the topic of my presentation to an exciting group of entrepreneurs earlier today. Think about this topic and the things I shared with them, I realize this information would be useful to a lot of people. Some of those people are reading this directly, and some others need to refer people to this link so that they can come and read as well. In the next few days, I have a few “How to’s” in my mind to share. These are really easy things that if you know and practice can make a lot of difference in your business and in your life.

The first ground rule however, if you truly want to learn, is to first empty your cup. You will not learn anything new, if you assume you already know. Knowledge or the assumption of it, is the greatest hindrance to more knowledge. As teacher students – the most excellent type of student, the one that listens to become a teacher, we must constantly humble ourselves and learn. We must not let knowledge puff  us up and make us resistant to new information. The day the seal of knowledge locks our ears, is the day we become useless and irrelevant to new possibilities around us. 20yrs experience as an employee does not equate to years of experience running a business. Sometimes the way up, is down. Never let any level of knowledge rob you of what you don’t know. There is no fool, like an old fool. Once you have laid aside your prejudices, let’s delve into how you can expand your business. Continue reading
