Before you lose your job

One day you will lose your job! Either by choice or by force! One day you will have to go away from that place you have been going and coming from for however long it has taken you. In life, everything has a start and an end, there is a day to born and a day to die, a day to begin and a day to end. Those who live the highest quality of life are those who live today with an eye on their end. The greatest liberation any human can ever experience is when his/hear fears don’t hold him/her back. The same way that dying makes living exciting, the same way the thought of the day we’ll lose our jobs, should make you spend the time you currently have wisely!

I heard have heard of GMs, SMs, Ds who lived in big houses, drove the flashiest cars end up as highclass beggers and mere social and political commentators. Why?  Because while they were on their jobs, they thought erroneously that it would last forever. They did not know that the end was nearer than far. While they carried buckets, they considered the act of stooping to build pipes too low for them. Some of them left their jobs with huge bank balances, but the enterpreneurial way, which as no respect for years of experience dealt them a knock out in the early rounds of their ventures.  Some of them were thieves, what they got was stolen and it went the way of stolen funds. The words I write to you today, will stand firm as judgement for your future, if you ever live less than what you were created to do! When your life can be summarized by a routine that does not have a date of escape, you are like the children of  Isreal who kept on cycling round a mountain instead of making progress. Stop hiding incompetence or inability to add value behind a company logo. Start exposing yourself and getting yourself set for when you will lose your job. Mark my words, the first showers of the great storms is all that we have seen, many who are comfortable today will beg tomorrow. Many who are not developing skills today will be slaves tomorrow, and many who have ill gotten money today will be needy tomorrow. The storm is coming, let who is wise join the company of Noah in the Ark of deliverance that is being built and let the fools scorn and laugh. He who laughs last, laughs best.

A few days ago, I dug into a few past articles I had writen on this blog. The popular ones, and the not so popular ones. God has really been good to me, and to many who hold my words as more than common words, and have found the courage to take action. I have said things two years ago, that took 6 months to manifest, I have made declarations that just a few weeks ago came to pass. I cannot say for if I am a prophet or not, but I know one thing for certain, God does reveal secrets to me, and show me things that are to come! Today, the next level beckons and I must serve my purpose and lay the words on you.

Before you lose your Job

1. Do not Steal!

Whatever money you make by fraudulence, by taking what does not belong to you, by playing on your employers intelligence will not last, no matter what you use it to do. Some people refute this perspective and say they can use the stolen funds to buy assets, build houses, invest in shares or other companies, if you care to know the truth, every activity you participate in is seed for your tomorrow and a harvest of your past. Ill gotten wealth is like a caterpilla, it looks like all it can do is crawl until it develops into a butterfly and flies. Be honorable, better a broke employee living within his/her means than a successful, wealthy employee with questionable resources. Life has it’s way of bringing the harvest – with loss, death, calamities e.t.c. If you have stolen before or are currently stealing, don’t just repent, go and make it right.

2. Get a life!

If most of your friends are in your office, you are being sucked into the maze. Don’t get yourself stuck with the same people you work with for the best hours of your life. Go prospecting for friends that are different from you, go for some clearly better than you, don’t have friends by accident, don’t be chosen, choose. Experts say you should watch the people you hang out with most, your life will end plus or minus 10% of their life! Financially and otherwise, your life gravitates to a region slightly below or above the life’s of your friends. It’s not how much you have in your account that always counts, it’s who you have access to that matters more.

3. Have Options!

Many people are slaves to their employment and their bosses, not because it’s so enjoyable but because they do not have options. They have a few other things they are doing but they are not sure of any of them. Their existence as corporate biggies makes majority only look for deals that are already big. Unknown to many, if you start big, when the storms of life hit you hard and take you down, you will need to beg to start big, but if you start small, you can always start all over again! Get options, be willing to start with nothing, be willing to start small. Don’t disqualify anything as below you, you earn 7 digits(NGN) per month today true, but if it all will stop when you lose your job, you are gambling with your future. Stop, think, ask questions. Venture, dare, take risks. You will lose some and you will win some. If you are willing to lose long enough, you will win long enough. There are people not as bright as you, not as opportuned as you doing more with their lives, look outside the window of your office, once in a while.

4. Learn!

Invest in knowledge. Empty your pocket to fill your head, and your head will fill your pocket. Learn like knowledge is running out of fashion. Read books, watch interesting history, attend seminars organized by people who have seen things different from you, learn from experience, others and yours, get a mentor. Do whatever you need to do within ethical boundaries, but by all means learn! Empty bags can’t stand tall, empty heads can’t be confident. Wisdom, which is the application of accumulated knowledge, makes a man’s face to shine. Your confidence level is an indication of the stuff that you have. If whatever you are doing doesn’t give you an opportunity to learn, run! Take your life off the flames!

5. Give Exceptionally.

I have found out in life, that those who have the propensity to give the most, get wealth the most. The universe is set up by God based on principles, and the principles cannot be broken. If you give, you will reap it somewhere in your future. If you don’t faint in doing good, you will be rewarded! Don’t wait until you are stinking rich before you begin to give scholarhsips, sponsor students, take care of orphans or contribute to worthy courses. Start now, before you lose your job! What you will regret in this life is not how much you should have gotten, but how much value you could have added, how much a difference you could have made, and what else you could have done! Don’t work like a moron – going and coming and going and coming without leaving a lasting impact on your world. Give yourself and give of yourself!

Great post from a great guy.God will keep you for us.I think most us are waiting for green light that may never come; And the right time is when you are still working. That’s the right time one can engage him/her in different experiments on what to venture into after leaving your job.We need to act now because there will never be the right time to start than now.IF YOU FAIL TO LEARN THROUGH A GRADUAL PROCESS,YOU WILL LEARN THROUGH A VERY HARD EXPERIENCE!

Deolu your message today is very hot, not sparing at all but the joyful thing about it is that they are all truth. He that has an ear to hear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the people. The articles you’ve written in the past and the ones you are writing now with the attestation of many of us who have read it will bear witness. The course of my life today is a testimony of the inspiration, courage, encouragement, wisdom i have gained immensely from relating with you and your blog, early this year while everyone is shouting recession i saw differently and i willingly resigned from my Job so that i can have time to pursue what my abilities can achieve, the first 3 months were a bit tough but a further 3 months to this day has been rewarding. Presently i’m making more money than the salary i left 6 months ago with more freedom of my time but the joyful thing about it is that i’m gaining a lot of knowledge and skills in the process which is enabling me to add more value to so many lifes around me. Everyday a wide door of opportunities and ideas keep opening to me infact i have to keep sharing some of them with as many people that will listen and be serious about it. To as many friends out there who has been meaning and wishing to take a bold step but still considering or nurturing some fear of uncertainty, i have this to tell you “that limitation is unreal, it has no foundation, move against that fear you will be surprise it will fall down flat”. Don’t remain where you are move forward, take bold steps with informed diligence, like Deolu has rightly said get your yourself acquainted with people who are travelling in the direction you desire, develop a networks of likeminded people, be ready to get educated again, your life is much more than that seemily secure job that has engulfed all your life. You have to work out your way out of slavery of Job routine (RAT RACE) especially when it doesn’t allow you to have time for other opportunities. Remove the limit off your life, dare to venture out into unlimited opportunities, you have no excuse except the ones you gave yourself and decided to nurture. Only the doers will change their life for the better. Thanks Deolu for always being who you are to many us, you are always an inspiration, the wisdom and Grace of God on you trips me anytime, keep up the good work.

    Wow! Chairman, spot on issues
These are timeless words, especially at a time when you cannnot determine when you or your organization would part ways.
One morning you are lavishing your salary, another month you are out of a job, out of work and looking for a a place to hook yourself for an opportunity to live from hand to mouth.
everyman who is not adding value to the organization would soon be listed under EXPENSES.
    More Sir!

A lot of us are gambling with our futures by relying on faceless organisations who offer nothing but a salary. Take your future into your OWN hands, take a gamble, be a lion for a day rather than a sheep for life! Once again your musings are correct and on point! More grease to you Deolu.

  15. OMOZELEon 25 Jun 2009 at 1:20 pm

true words. there is no security in any job and that is why a person has to understand how to generate multiple streams of wealth because in a countries such as ours that one isnt too certain how bright the future will hold, it places demands on people to lay a good foundation for the generation after them. some of this public office holders think that the amiable future they can secure for their families is gotten from stealing and so they steal public funds entering into billions of naira tied up in foreign accounts.

may God help each and evryone of us to begin to fully look into ourselves in the search for financial literacy and indepence. not in the assurance of the company you work, not in the fact that you are earning more than you need now, not in any job security because there is nothing like that(ask GENERAL MOTORS), not in that uncle of yours who has promised you because vain is the help of any man but in you!. lets learn from what is happening in the world today as a result of the meltdown and begin to take our destinies into our own hands because the future isnt about a time to come but it is a process of time.may Nigeria be blssed because of us.

Joblessness is the destiny of all employee. Some are aware of this, while some ignore the truth. Some embrace it, while others resist it.

  18. ikotun adebision 25 Jun 2009 at 2:24 pm

this will go far and wide to the ears and hearts of those who care to orchestrate an bright future. great men today saw today yesterday, they saw the end from the beginning and loosing a job is one reality our leaders do not want to come to terms with. no , matter how long, how pleasant and how frustrating the work might be, one day one will leave. one issue i have found so interesting in the past few days is the fact that no matter how much you earn you still cannot survive with it because it won’t last. men that will live the future are those that will invest in human capital development, impact making, research and fact findings. when you leave your job where do you go stay, home? with who, where, people you have deprived of several privileges, an environment you deliberately refused to develop…o it is worth thinking about. because the future of so many Nigerian leaders seems and in fact will be threatened with the way they are using power and administering justice. lets have a rethink about this issue if we are indeed set to secure a preferable future.

  19. Adekeye Olusegunon 25 Jun 2009 at 2:46 pm

This is part of a blueprint which is meant to help me accept basic facts about life and to finally embrace and master the art of gaining financial freedom!!

  20. ikotun adebision 25 Jun 2009 at 2:59 pm

a greater part of an individuals working life is formed by the kind of attitude he puts up while he is there. the correct mental attitude towards the future is essential in creating a comfortable lifestyle after leaving the work place. many workers acquire materials that will not last through illegal means, without a consideration of the implications.
great piece CM. Nigeria must change beginning from me.

Deolu, May God continue to bless you! You are indeed a blessing to your generation and generations to come. From my earliest recollctions of you back i the days when you gave yourself selflessly to Exploitmakers and SCM until now you have remained consistently impacting positively on destinies. This piece couldn’t be more timely. Truely there is a storm coming but the commotion is for our (the wise) promotion. Job security is a myth. Increasingly so in the current times. We must ’see’ like our role model who through the eyes of faith saw only peace in a ’storm’. So much so that when he was to speak to the ’storm’ He called it ‘peace’. (Peace be still) The chinese word for ‘crisis’ is the same one used for ‘opportunity’. Big opportunities are at hand. The world is changing and you know what, no one really knows where all this would end. I recently was at a meeting where several well respected business leaders dissected and discussed the global recession and the outlook for the near future and I remember several guests commenting as they left that nothing had been added to them. Reality is a lot of the leaders we see today, confidently expressing views about the future, are for the first time in recent history at a complete loss. Whilst nothing is new under the sun, the times we are entering are like nothing that has ever been experienced. Therein lies the opportunity. I believe an opportunity to create the future!

Nice words! Great lessons! I think the reason why most people get stranded after losing their job is because they have no value to add to the society because all the while, they have developed no useful skill they can start with.

Read through the article in quite in hurry, then I had to go back and re-read it. Tight writing, sir. I must say I am privileged to get access to all of this material at this time in my life, because this is giving me a really big head-start. Information really is light and power. I am choosing to take it beyond the context of ‘job’, and looking at what will happen when the present changes. I would suggest that everyone (who hasnt gone through it before) get a copy of ‘Who moved my cheese’, and watch/read it. Great site, great author. Takecare.

Highly successful people know the key to their success is to find a mentor that is successful in the area of expertice and then learn through their programs. This helps to reduce your learning curve and propels you to become successful very quickly.

  36. felixon 29 Jun 2009 at 3:49 pm

True words… i felt this one. And regrading the prophet thingy… you have always nailed me spot, sometimes i wonder why i don’t listen from the onset, but i guess the experience i gather along the road brings the lessons clearer. Thank You.

“Invest in knowledge. Empty your pocket to fill your head, and your head will fill your pocket. Learn like knowledge is running out of fashion. Read books, watch interesting history, attend seminars organized by people who have seen things different from you, learn from experience, others and yours, get a mentor” this is a very great piece, great inspiration. Alas! this is the time to sow, time to invest, time to acquire knowledge, time to labour hard, because only those that labour have right to the reward when it comes. no matter how much a person has, this present economy will eat up any asset that is not built to last. those that will be rich in the future will be those few that seize this time and opportunity will laugh latter. it’s time to build a wealth empire not just a fat bank account.

Oga deolu, this is a big challenge and the time is good. we can all still start some where.

where is the wisdom and passion that brought us independence in the lives of the sons of our freedom fighters? i think when we are able to answer this question, we would know what to do before we leave that job.

  48. holuwafemion 17 Jul 2009 at 9:43 am

Good one Deolu. Simply reminds me of the biblical story of the shrewd employee who used his opportunities at work to his advantage. While we dont have to be fraudulent or dishonest, we can simply learn to maximise the opporunities we have now vis-a-vis resources, connections… We need to prepare for the inevitable future!

  49. ikotun adebision 25 Jul 2009 at 10:55 am

before you loose your job, discover your work. your job is what you are paid to do while your work is with you do with the gifts inherent in you. you find it easy and pleasurable when you are on your spot and working with passion. even God demands we work. His divine power has given us all that pertains to life and godliness…
