The Lunch Date

Lunch Date

Lunch Date

There is so much personal development material on the street of daily activity, that it takes not wanting to consciously learn not to grow. In the last few days, I’ve come to see two interesting sides of a coin. That associations can bring good, and they can bring bad. That common meetings with other mortals, or access to the mind of great men via their books, are some of the most life changing events on this planet.

I learnt, that once upon a time, there was a young lawyer who sought help from an older lawyer. The young lawyer was finding it hard to practice litigation, he had no clients, and it wasn’t looking like there was light at the end of his tunnel. The old lawyer had gone through this time as well, but now was a big time popular lawyer who made lots of money from big cases. He begged the big lawyer to give him his small briefs, so at least he also could have some crumbs that fall off the big table. The old lawyer informed him, that there was no small brief - lawyers only know the beginning of a brief, no one knows how big the brief would be. The young lawyer was disappointed that the old lawyer was not helpful, and turned to leave. The old lawyer however stopped him and told him that even though he could give him nothing, he was willing to have lunch date with him at a future date, but would like them to stroll together from his office down about 2km to where they would eat lunch. The young lawyer felt a bit insulted that all he was going to get was lunch, but reluctantly agreed. The set day came and they had the long walk to lunch. 2-3months after this lunch he started getting calls, briefs, and business. His fortune changed and he was so excited, he had a party, and invited the big lawyer to come and see how well he’s doing, even without his help.

It turned out at the party, that all the new clients he now had, were friends of the old lawyer who had seen him strolling along the long road with the old lawyer. His association with the wise had confered on him the opportunities of the wise. They had patronized him because they felt, he’ll be cheaper, but he has the right relationships to know the right things. Like the holy book says, he that works with the wise, will be wise, and a companion of fools will be destroyed.

Good friends bring about good opportunities, bad habits call bad habits. I remember how shocked I was in Ife, to hear that there was a new phenomenum called yahoo plus. I wondered what it was, so I asked. I learnt that online scam had stepped up into a new level, people had left the electronic and they had now gone spiritual. Yahoo plus, is wealth by spiritual commitments. I hear it’s so bad in some of our higher institutions now that it’s alarming. In case you are wondering what kind of spiritual commitment - imagine a student, going to meet a traditionalist to give him the power to get wealth. I hear they engage in very funny and obsene things, like digging out dead bodies, sleeping in their place, taking their baths there and going to give the water to the baba. I hear some enter into covenants with their girlfriends towards marriage, while the girlfriend takes the soul plunge on behalf of the family, the baba seals it up with rules and regulations. Our young people are selling their souls to the devil in wholesale! I was so shocked I refused to believe it, until my informat provided me with tangible evidence of people that were popularly known with yahoo plus. This must be a movie, not reality I said, but I hear right now, there are efforts to fence some graveyards in one of the schools now, because it’s no longer a random event. How did things get that bad? Let me show you. They started with yahoo yahoo… making money online by lying and dubious means. They got used to free money, and now that their yahoo yahoo is not getting quick enough results, that association has made them condescend to a yahoo plus. I don’t know how these two methods relate, but they have found the association. In the quest for personalized ATM machines in their bedrooms, some peoples children have literally died, while some have entered a covenant with the prince of this world.

They who have ears hear, the company you keep, will make you or mar you. How far you go, will drag you deeper or pull you higher. New people are at the visinity of every vissisitude. One good enterpise can open you up to bigger opportunities, and one bad habit can drag you to the pits! Who are you associating with today? What are you doing today? Where does that road lead?

  4. ODEDEYI EMMANUEL responds:

Deolu, those words are timely. Everybody wants to make it to the top quick without going through the process. EVERY lasting greatness is built with PATIENCE.

THE ONLY THING THAT IS BUILT FROM THE TOP IS THE GRAVE.

I think the lesson is that of PATIENCE.

The bible says we should FOLLOW or associate with or have lunch with (in your own words) is with those who through faith and PATIENCE obtain the promise.

  11. Bussee responds:

what do you expect sir…. I looked up the meaning of yahoo in thefreedictionary.com and see what it came up with as definitions.

    1. yahoo - a person who is not very intelligent or interested in culture
bumpkin, chawbacon, hayseed, hick, rube, yokel, rustic - an unsophisticated country person
    2. Yahoo - one of a race of brutes resembling men but subject to the Houyhnhnms in a novel by Jonathan Swift

You can imagine what yahoo plus will be defined as when the dictionary guys get hold of it……GREAT STUFF CM

  12. Olaoluwa responds:

Pro 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.I will consistently make sure i choose right.

  14. Solomon James responds:

A higher level of the elevator mentality, God help us.

  15. jimi odutola responds:

The get-rich syndrome has eaten up the whole society.remember, the campus is a microcosm of the bigger society and so,what happens in the real world happens there too.But what are the fellowships in ife doing deolu, because i remember when we were in ife such things rarely happen.OAU has the largest number of campus fellowships in the world and I stand to be corrected on this ,so what are they doing. The church itself has been taken over by these boys so what can the church do?NOTHING.GOD help us.

  16. Koyejo responds:

Our society placed an undue emphasis on people’s wealth without thorough investigation of where the money is coming from. The Language is “olowo laye mo - wealthy people are popular”, irrespective of the source, once you have some free money to throw around, the society will honour and respect you. The fear of God, good characters, professionalism (i.e. building a profession from a known field) and other good virtues are fast becoming a thing of the past in our society. The question is, what do we do?
    This is simply unimaginable!!

  17. emeka responds:

its no longer a new thing on OAU campus.exotic cars litter the campus..the campus cemetery is now a bathroom at night..the dark, crepy huts in ilesa, offa ilorin is the market where souls are exchanged for money..gullible ladies who woludnt mind enjoyin the money..one now roams the town mad..some die in terible accidents..so much for fast money..its a reflection of the money-crazed society we live in..our governors and co steal(or is take) becacuse their financial future is uncertain so they take all that they can-an opportunity comes once in lifetime abi?to these boiz the money is spent showing off in cars(funny enough they dont dress well, after all there is money) and cute apartments.some so called sensible ones build houses and invest in sharesm without knowing that money has wings most especially ill gotten wealth.to them the fleeting pleasure of being rich is more than the pain of eternal damnation.
its high time we start thinking for ourselves-may God save our youths.may God save naija!

  18. Tope responds:

This is really amazing! The future of Nigeria is being traded with. If our young men think that the only way to make money is through these fetish mean, what will happen when they fint their way to power?

    God help us!

Question for those of us who wouldn’t go that far - What will you do, or not do, to get money?

  19. banke responds:

am a young adult and i remember how the yahooo yahoo craze in my uni then used to get me mad…but this , is Scary and disheartening…i almost dont want to believe it but it so true!
may God save the souls of this young people.

  20. jay write responds:

    very true,

1 cor 15:33. bad association spoils good habits. i recently had to do a total overhauling in my life. i had to put my Mtn sim out of my fine and activate a new Zain line, WHY? do debug my life of unwholesome association. now, I have a strong commitment, if you are a bunch of go no where person, i either direct you to get help by introducing you to a good blogsite like http://www.deoluakinyemi.com or books or i’ll Just let you be before you drag me down with you.

Life is so short that we can’t afford to make our lives clumsy wit
h people who we drive us way back in life. Deolu, Good job.

    @deolu;

Your book about: “HOW TO GET YOUR DREAM JOB.”
the advice you gave about CV and References are they still valid today or recent development may have caused them to be reviewed?

  21. Ifeoluwa responds:

    @deolu;
May the God of heaven conitinue to REPLENISH you..
how far with the review of the book “HOW TO GET YOUR DREAM JOB”

  22. dorothy responds:

well one thing i know is that no matter how hard the devil tries to destroy our youth God isnt going to give up saving them,i dont know if i am thinking diffrently i just know the devil is all out to destoy as many live as he can, he is only using the spiritualist as agent and his victim are our potential brothers and sisters in the lord, lets fight back lets save them from his trap let pray for them untill the salvation of their soul comes to light.we are the light and the salt of the world.lets live up to our responsibility.

  23. JIDE AYINLA responds:

A wise man called Clement Stone said: Be careful the environment you choose for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose for you will become like them.

When we move with the wrong people, stay in the wrong environment, we will surely do the wrong things. Character is highly infectious, no wonder the Bible said; Don’t make friend with an easily angered man lest you learn his ways.

How many of us have discovered that after we changed environments, we exhibit traits of where we are coming from though while we were in the environment they were not exhibited in us.

thanks for reminding us of the Power of Association

  24. abidemi oderinlo responds:

I have heard of using Gounrds “ADO” with which they touch their tongues when they want to call their “Magas”
I have even heard of people making sacrifices especially in OSU and UNIBen but the burial ground episode is a new dimension to it.
    Jesus save us now…

A yoruba adage says” Omo to ba mo wo wé, a ba agba Jeun” A child that is wise enough to know the ways of the elder will surely dine with One… (if my interpretation is good enuff) and i can remember Deolu also saying “your network determines your networth”

Lets all sit back and continue to medidate and intercede for God to save the situation and also continue in our own ways to make things right through God.

Yahoo Plus or whatever form it takes will soon be a thing of the past…i’m praying

  25. Olayiwola responds:

In my opinion, the society has a share of the blame and a large chunk of it. Majority of people act according to the dictates of the society. In a family where parents accord more regard to the child who brings money and other expensive items home without any query of its source, tell me how a friend or neighbour to such a person would not engage in the same act. I have friends and relatives who indulge in Yahoo and their claim is that the society only respects you when your pocket speaks volume. Yes they are myopic but their mind has been conditioned by what they have been exposed to (let us thank God for our own lives if we have not been badly influenced).

What is the value being taught in our present day society “with money you can buy all things, even friends”. This ideology holds almost everywhere schools, hospitals and other places of public service.

I feel bad to see this generation almost losing out but let us be careful of what and who we celebrate.
Let us make these boys feel out of place, disregard them in the society and in the family circle because if we are not careful the coming generation would be badly affected.

A compendium of thoughts from me

  26. kene responds:

    thank u for this info

  27. Femi Emmanuel responds:

Great piece from a great man. I pray that God will increase you. Avaricious young people are sowing wind and they will surely reap whirlwind (Hosea 8:7). They want to walk but they don’t want to be toddlers before walking.Ignorantly, they will be forced to learn how to crawl when upright people will be flying on the wings of the spirit of God. For me, this is edifying.Deolu, Thanks once again!

  28. Ayobami responds:

    Not surprising at all ….
It all started with the use of Juju by the yahoo boys. It is called Mayehun - literarily meaning - don’t disobey my voice. According to my research; some boys in a University of Technology notorious for Yahoo Yahoo in the South West were having problems with their maga (the white man). The guy was not cooperating. While discussing it - a mechanic popularly known as Alfa approached them and said though he does not know how to operate a computer - but he can help help them. That was the start of using juju to talk to the white man on phone and it worked many times. The Alfa got so popular in that town so much that he left his mechanic workshop to be the pillar for most of the yahoo boys in that University town. Now to Ogun Owo - call a spade a spade cos that is what it is. Some of us warned about these things as far as 4 years ago - that where will yahoo end when maga wises up? Is it that they will start carrying guns or do wealth sacrifice. The latter came true but the former will also happen. That same University I talked about - I learned as early as 2007 that boys are doing Ogun Owo. So it is actually not a very new phenomenon. Sometimes I get afraid and ask how we got to this level? Simple answer - the decay of family life and values. How would I have been able to explain to my parents the cars and flashy lifestyle? This is just the beginning unless some people are ready to stand up to fight both spiritually and physically. Some are sleeping in graveyards but some also killed their girlfriends. Who knows the next victim?

  29. Cyril responds:

    Touching but yet timely.

    Thanks Deolu.

  30. Soji responds:

    Yahoo plus is Life minus….
we know better to watch the company we keep….

  31. Adewale Olaore responds:

Great write! and how true? CM, you will be the 3rd person I am hearing this new phenomenon from. A friend who schools in O.O.U mentioned it not quite two months ago… it’s really horrible but my concern is How do we curb these things?.

We need to seriously intercede on behalf of this land. Things like these are better solved in the place of prayer. Nigeria is God’s and no force can contend it.

  32. toyin responds:

Waow! never heard of such stuff and didnt quite understand your article until i read some of the comments. Are you serious? It is a pity but the fact is that this canker has spread even to institutions that should be immune to the lure of money. I’m still trying to understand/believe what i’ve read here!
