Systems 101

Red Alert: “Even though Diamond Cash Club site is still up, it is feared that they are already gone with the wind, information reaching me is mixed and uncertain, but I advice all who still sign up to this program to do so with care, as all who cycled for payment in the last month are yet to be paid, and except by a stroke of miracle, are unlikely to be paid. Please remember I warned about the likelihood of events like this towards the close of the year. Guess the bells are ringing earlier than anticipated. It might end up being malicious information, but there is no harm in being aware… beware!”

If you knew me 10yrs ago in OAU ife, you probably knew me as someone who takes tutorial classes on Chemical Engineering Themodynamic Systems -CHE 201. I started lecturing the course on the year that I myself took the course. My average tutorial class size was 300 students – my classmates from different faculties. It was apparent from those times, that many people do not understand the concept of systems. I’m not sure if the real gift I had was understanding the course or being able to help others understand it, not only did I score 96% in the course, a large population of my tutorial classmates either scored A’s or their most alarming A on that course.

Before I bore you with the details of the Chemical Engineering course, let me quickly draw your attention to what I really want to write about today – Systems. Many people don’t understand systems, maybe because they have never been schooled in this line, maybe because it’s a bit abstract, or maybe people are just refusing to apply themselves. Or could it be that most people just don’t have natural talents for systems design or interpretation? Can it be linked to the same old problem of why we cannot all see a three dimensional drawing on a two dimensional surface? Whatever it is, I’ve seen people move from zero to hero, so pay attention, and you might just learn a thing or two. Continue reading

Leaders Wanted!!

Advert : The First NNC ”Prelaunch Presentation and Matters Arising“ will be holding in Elomaz Hotel (Maryland behind Planet One) at 3pm on Sunday the 2nd of December, 2007.  This first Seminar is Free of Charge as the venue will be taken care of by the Club Managers.  We will however appreciate if all who intend to attend notify us either by commenting here or calling Seun on 08035614101 to book ahead so we can prepare for the exact number of attendees. Agenda includes, the NNC concept, charity projects in December, brainstorming on areas we can add value.

I have a picture in my office that I took in South Africa. It’s a picture with the caption “Wanted” I was dressed like a cowboy with a gun and a ransom of $1,000,000 was put on me. It’s a conversation starter for anyone who comes into my office. I like to think that was my ransom price 2yrs ago, as the value ought to be more than that now…lol.

Some people walk into my office, catch the joke, and ask where I’m wanted so they can provide me, I tell them that I can pay the ransom money if that’s what they want…lol. That’s on a lighter note, what I really want to share today is about Leadership. In every human endeavor, in every establishment, in every corporation or nation, Leaders are wanted! The gap between any country, individual or business and it’s future is leaders! The gap between Nigeria today, and Nigeria tomorrow is Leadership!

Everybody needs to develop him/herself to become a better leader. Leadership has no gender neither is it the exclusive preserve of some, we all can be leaders and the more leaders we have around, the faster our pace and the surer our movement. The best definition of leadership I’ve come to like says, Leadership is the art of transforming intention into action. I just love that definition, as it shows that all must be leaders.

So what skills do leaders need to develop, and how can you become a better leader right there where you are? Continue reading

Why the Boards Contest?

Writing this article, I’m asking myself, “aint I over communicating”? I’m consoled however that I can’t overcommunicate. One extra posting is one extra reference point for the days when people claim not to understand things.

One of the most frequently asked questions I have been asked about the New Nigeria Club Initiative is this.

” I believe in a New Nigeria, I love the concept and the ideals, I think this is the product of a master mind, this project has a lot of merit on it’s own outside the boards, you don’t need those boards as they will go slow with time, why did you include the boards?”

Find below, 3 reasons why the boards are there, and 4 other facts about the board. Please note that these reasons do not have to agree with your ideology. We cannot please all, we can only stay true to our objectives and be accountable to all the buy the vision. Continue reading

The New Nigeria Story -3

I’ve written a little about the idea, a little about the people, and sure I need to share my understanding of the system and process. By the way, we have less than 48hrs left to prelaunch. All the t’s have been crossed, just dotting the final few i’s.

In the course of pushing forward this idea, I have come to know some people better and appreciate them and their roles a bit more. We’ve had meetings where we played devils advocate, why will this fail? We’ve looked at it from the top, and from the bottom. We’ve spoken with multilevel marketing enthusiasts and we’ve spoken with people that disdain MLM. We’ve even had meetings where we deliberated on the possibility of establishing the social network without the MLM side of it. At several different times I have been tempted to change the model… Let people pay for club membership, enjoy the discounts and the opportunity to meet with people who believe in Nigeria’s future, work on projects together and knock off any board or mlm type structure as a benefit.

What will be the difference, I have often asked myself and my colleagues, and the answer we often seem to get is. It will still be grand, it will be slower, but it will surely happen, but why crawl if you can fly? We thought it over and over, and decided eventually to succumb to one of the lesser temptations we had. We decided to leave MLM out of the benefits of the program! Now if you stop here, you might be partially misinformed. Read on. Continue reading

The New Nigeria Story – 2

In the bridge between wondering, dream or envisioning and the actualization of any dream, there are people and systems. In this particular story, I’ll like to write a little about the people and perhaps if space permits the systems that were and are critical to the process of achieving the New Nigeria Dream.

The picture sounds very close to perfect at the end, but it wasn’t always that clear. The inputs of people have added a lot to what now is, and would yet add more to what will be.

Initially it sounded like a joke, but gradually it took shape. The first set of people to buy into the possibilities and own it are the Generis Folks. Their thoughts and inputs into this entire structure has been phenomenal. There are days when business is like war, at those times, you need to face the fight without retreat or looking behind. Any slight glimpse at the back, or thought of it can cause your downfall, you must progress confidently forward knowing that the spears, swords and guns behind you are for you and not against you. These are men and women whose willingness to work for free was not only verbally requested, but was tested. Whenever I think of them, I remember David’s mighty men – Not people classified as much by society, but their presence with David in his hour of desperation and need, qualified them to be Isreals generals. The New Nigeria Story-1

Some weeks back I wrote an article on our Envisioned Nigeria. The article was read by many and elicited a lot of comments. I was impressed by the number of young Nigerians that are genuinely interested in the birth of the Nigeria of our dreams. We also all alluded to the fact that what was stopping us from greatness wasn’t lack of human talent, resources or even capital. It occured to me that the solution to the challenges facing our great country today wasn’t that there weren’t people who knew what the issues were, there are people who know and, within their own circles of influence, are causing some ripples of change. The real problem is that though majority has an opinion that things can change, they are scattered voices.

It occured to me that the first step towards National Development, is a platform that unites the many voices.  Having the same opinion doesn’t count, creating a platform where we all execute these opinions does. For example, if we all believe that Mr B is the ideal leader for Nigeria, it won’t matter if we don’t all take action and vote for him. It became apparent that we needed a critical mass of people, a cult-like structure and also a self sustaining system. We’ll need to have weekly envisioning meetings, monthly seminars and quarterly conversations. We need to drive it like a crusade, and publicize the desire and possibility of change on the mountain tops. Some people will not join because they believe it’s not profitable for them, some people will participate because there is nothing else to do. It would require many volunteers, it would require a large workforce, it will require commitment and it won’t happen overnight. If the meetings are too regular people will wear out, if the meetings were too infrequent people will loose fire. How do we make all these happen and get the critical  mass with so many odds against us? Or is it a wild goose chase…? Continue reading

The Next Big Thing -National Rebirth

Patriotism

I have not had much sleep in the last 48hrs, I have been working hard with a few colleagues at arriving as close to perfection as possible on a project many of us are working on. My patriotism and desire for my nation and it’s unique people’s development is undeniable. I decided to venture into a book I wrote over a year ago that still remains unpublished. The title of the book is “10 things you should consider before choosing a career”. I don’t know if it happens to you, but I feel eerie when I read what I wrote long ago, I feel like it wasn’t me… and perhaps it really wasn’t.

One of my objectives for writing that book back then, was to help in Nation building and national rebirth. Today, my heart goes out to Nigeria and I think the thoughts in the book are still as powerful now, as they were when I wrote them. Read the entire clip from the book here. Continue reading
