Should I, Should I not?

Posted by Adeolu Akinyemi @ August 8th, 2007 |

Should we answer a fool according to his folly?

Proverbs 26:4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him

Proverbs 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

Growing up, these two verses used to excite me, when I was taught paradox in English, this sounded like the typical example. It was open for debate, two contrasting verses placed side by side in a book that was meant to provide guidance. Do we obey the first command, or the last command? Or was this an error? Or as my studious friends will suggest, let’s check the greek root word for both fools, maybe they are different, maybe one is kesil and the other kelis…lol. But seriously, these are two opposite statements placed side by side in the greatest book of all times (my opinion - not far fetched though, it still holds the guiness book of records most printed, most sold, most retranslated and most in demand book in the world)

I believe strongly that the meeting point of any such paradoxes is wisdom. Wisdom is the right application of total available knowledge in the solution of problems. There are times to answer a fool according to his folly, and there are times to refrain from answering a fool according to his folly. The ability to know the difference in these times, is wisdom!

Permit me to speak authoritatively when I say that there are aspects of the human potential that are inaccessible to man until he is submitted to higher powers. Just like there are aspect of your drive that will never be tapped until you are emotionally propelled to prove a point, or like there are aspects of your creative genius that will not be tapped for as long as you are partially responsible for your life (totaly employed, living with parents, secure), in the same vein there are aspects of your human potentials for decision making that are less than best without submission to authority. If you don’t understand what you just read fully, that makes two of us…lol.

There are no straight one sentence all time answers to most of the problems in the world. As diverser as our fingerprints and retina scans, so are the solutions to seemingly similar problems common to man. Wisdom is the ability to understand your own current scenarios and make the very best decisions of it. Wisdom is one resource worth trading all you have for, because if you have gained wisdom, you can get everything else.

Money is good, it provides answers to all things. Wisdom also is good, as it provides answers also to all things. But wisdom exceeds money in that wisdom has the capacity to preserve the life of those that have it, while money cannot. Wisdom is the number one vital resource on earth, and anything that makes you desire anything ahead of wisdom is the lack of it.

How can one become wise?

Fear of God: The foundational requirement for wisdom is submission to higher authorities. It’s the belief that there is a God that deserves to be revered. It’s the belief that there is more to man, more to our current existence. It is subission to true north principles, submission to principles that are beyond self. Go and check it, every great man or woman had a strong sense of responsibility to higher powers. I won’t decieve you, wisdom is spiritual.

Desire: The starting point of all achievement is desire. That may sound very banal, but trust me, the day you desire a thing, is the day you start making deposits and sowing seeds to reap that very thing. The laws that govern the universe respond to desires. If the desire is strong, the work is half done. If you desire wisdom, you will pursue it, it will give you a healthy appetite for knowledge, you will search for it like gold.

Ask: During a meeting of top salespeople from around the country, the ‘big cheese’ himself, a man who’d consistently had the highest sales figures for the last 20 years, and who earned more money than even the owner of his company, got up to speak.

“I am now going to reveal the secret of my success,” he said. “I wrote it down on a piece of paper and I put it in this envelope. But success must be earned. So I’m going to sell the envelope to the highest bidder. You have my word that it contains what I said - the Secret of my Success, not only as a salesman, but also in life.”

The bidding started slowly… $5, then $10, then $50, $100, $130, $150, $200. Finally one of his colleagues bought the envelope for $1000. The happy buyer took the envelope and kept it to himself until he got home that night. Only then did he open it to learn THE SECRET OF SUCCESS.

What do you think was written on the piece of paper?

Think about it. Make a mental note of whatever comes to mind before reading the answer and in my opinion, what was written on that piece of paper, is worth much more than $1000. The winner of the auction tore open the envelope, unfolded the piece of paper and read the following hand-written words:

THE SUCCESS’ SECRET IS… TO ASK.
    — Author Unknown

You will learn more from an hour with a wise man, than 10yrs of learning by experience. The bridge between your present and your future is your mouth… Ask

  1. Emmanuel responds:

Exactly, i totally agree…most persons just want to succeed without ASKING how others have done it..very true..i wonder how the man felt after reading the content of the envelope? lol

  2. 'Wale Akinola responds:

What can I say than “God Bless You”!

  3. Gbubemi responds:

Funny enough, I was thinking along the same lines on my way to work this morning. If I don’t have anything I need/ want, it’s probably because I haven’t asked for it, the worst that can happen is that I get a “no” abi?

  4. olaito responds:

It is always good to ask, the worst answer one can get is usually “NO” and if we do not take it personal, we can go places.Stay on top.

  5. oladipupo responds:

It’s always good to ask.One of the bible verses says we should & it will be given.

    I will keep on asking…………..

  6. mee responds:

a wise man said to me a long time ago then he had this copied and pasted on his office wall, each time i hopped from feet to feet wondering if i should ask him something (thinking i may get a slap)…he just pointed at the poster. This set the foundation for my success today…..”it is better to ask a foolish question than to make a foolish mistake!!”. I can never repay my debt to my father!

  7. Freelance responds:

    Thanks man! Very nice.

  8. jaggar responds:

    Hi Deolu,

Wise words from a wise and knowledgable man.

  9. Niyi Ajayi responds:

Very insightful and thought provoking, as usual!

  10. Oyewole responds:

Yeah, yeah, when you ask, things goes easy for you. But hey, be carefull what you ask ’cause you might get it.Nice one Deolu.

  11. skybaba responds:

Ask and it shall be given unto you…………….
Those are the words from the Bible.

I feel a lot of us place limitations on ourselves in form of knowledge barriers that we have failed to lift.

Most of us can be more successful in certain areas of our lives or businesses, but we’ve failed to lift the Knowledge Barrier in that area of our life or business.

Have you ever invited your MD/Boss/Mentor out to dinner, to ASK him/her how they became successful??
The dinner thing is just to create a “NICE” atmosphere, so the guy can relax and talk to you.
A simple evening chat over dinner of this kind could save you years of trial and error or mistakes because you have ASKED someone successful and raised the Knowledge barrier over yourself a little bit higher!!!!

See you all at the TOP!!!!!

  12. Bukunmiomidiran responds:

    Good one…….

So many other life’s principles are subsumed in ASKING. When you ask, it shows DESIRE to learn, it shows HUMILITY, it shows COURAGE, it shows RELATIONSHIP/NETWORKING…ETC….

I’d continue to ask and also be willing to give. The world revolves around the two.

  13. daprinz responds:

Happy belated Birthday to you Deolu, I wish you many Fruitful and fulfilled years ahead. I just had time time to check out this site after a long time outside town.
Ol’ boy! You are doing a great job around here, I wish you more success in life.
The greatest favour any man can do himself is to ASK even when it seems stupid. Keep asking, just don’t forget that whatever you ask you are sure to get it sooner or later. One Luv!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Solar responds:

We often don’t get what we need because we never have the courage to ask and when we eventually ask, we are not persuassive enough. Period!

  15. Ebenezer responds:

    Deolu,

This is good for our health,as an auditor when you are put on enquiry you ASK QUESTIONS to unravel mysteries and to know the unknown.

    God bless you real good.

  16. goodguy responds:

I read the story about the salesman about 2 yrs ago. Good to be reminded in a better way once again. Lovely write-up there!

  17. Zainab Musa responds:

I cant understand why people think it is an act of weakness or foolishness to ask questions! How else can one know anything except by asking? Why are we always so shy to ask questions?? Even God Himself does not move unless someone asks him to. I agree with Bukun, asking questions shows humility and courage, a willingness to learn, and therein lies the secret to success…

  18. Jerome responds:

The Holy Bible says in Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you”

    Everything can be summarized as ASK i.e. A = Ask, S = Seek and K = Knock

  22. matlyvic responds:

    Hi Deolu,

Everything about this life is all about asking. Education is from raddle to crave. One yoruba adage says, Eni to ba bere ona ki n sina… meaning if you ask for direction you will not be misled.

So wisdom is asking and asking is the principal thing so get it!

    shalom!

  23. Adeolu Akinyemi responds:

    @ all,

I’m impressed with the healthy contribution here. I really am.

    Fineass,

You don’t need to cycle out before you join ecash invest. It’s tough to explain… but trust me, tops 6months down the line, we’ll see CF is the best.

  24. stafunmi responds:

Really, desire is very important if one must achieve anything at all. That is very correct.Seems as if i never knew that.
How easy it is to forget these basic requirements of success.with a strong desire, success though not cheap is not unattainable.

    Deolu,
this is very correct, effect of this post is far reaching for moi :-)

  25. seun responds:

  26. Obiageli responds:

Hello, i am quite impressed by the above writeup. JESUSCHRIST IS OUR WISDOM. proverbs2:6 goes thus:For the LORD giveth wisdom:out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. This is for those who ask or cry after it.

  27. Gbenguz responds:

I have been addicted to this site since i discovered it.
Thank you Deolu for the nonstop knowledgization.
The Bible says “my people perish for lack of knowledge”.The best way to know is to ask!
Talking about ASK,The Bible further emphasizes “you do not recieve because you do not ask,you do not find because you do not seek, and finally, you do not get opened for because you do not knock”!
I make bold to say many of us are even timid to place that call that may change our lives.MAKE THAT CALL AND YOU WILL BE ANSWERED EVEN IF IT IS A NO.JUST KNOW THAT A NO IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE.DONT ALSO TAKE A NO FOR AN ANSWER.THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

  28. Abidemi Oderinlo responds:

This is just another wonder full piece, i can’t imagine the world’s continous existence without people asking questions. Not asking questions depicts stangnancy and that kills the mind. the scriptures say:

ASK and it shal be given unto you
    SEEk and yee shall find
KNOCK and it shall be open unto you

Concantenating the first Alphabets of this quotes…you are left with the Word “ASK”. asking questions brings answers and answers brings solutions to what ever the question you’ve asked.

Wisdom is the key to success in Life, yes it is spiritual but it is a conscious decisive decision. the scriptures says
“say unto wisdom thou arth my sister and unto knowlegde thou arth my kinsmen”. Your personal decision to seek wisdom leads you to the spiritual understanding of it all, and you can only be wise by seeking the milk of wise men.

  29. Gbenguz responds:

Please accept my belated birth greetings.
Adeolu means The Lords Crown, son of Akinyemi- befitting boldness!
That makes you The Lords Crown with Befitting boldness.May your star never grow dim.You will live long to reap the rewards of your labour of love in Jesus.Amen.
    BEST PERSONAL REGARDS
