Extreme Makeover - Mini Edition

Posted by Adeolu Akinyemi @ June 10th, 2007 |

“To the world, you may be just one person; but to just one person you may be the world”

Don’t you think it will be a good idea if we can pull funds together and make a real difference in the lives of people who N50,000 to N100,000 will be a big miracle for? Don’t you think it will be a good idea to shock a not so privileged student, artisan, farmer e.t.c. with a life changing gift of a few thousands? It’s a God given idea, and some of my close friends have already volunteered to join me in fully funding the first few, before my online friends catch on.

“He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, and He will repay him for his good deed.” -Prov 19:17

I remember back in the days in University, when for a stretch of many months, myself and a few friends gathered together at the dot of midnight. Wherever we were, we all headed for the same place by quarter to 12. We would spend 15-20mins, and that will be the end of our meeting. It wasn’t a cult :), it was a meeting birthed by understanding. We came together to create our futures with our words. We were 7 when we started, we had a golden rule not to invite anyone, but not to refuse anyone. By the time we had gone for 2months, we were over 200. Don’t ask me how, that is the topic for another day. What reminds me of this time, is one of the issues we loved to declare about -wealth -”I am rich!”, “I can’t be poor!”,”I can’t be small”, “God gives me power to get wealth”, e.t.c. We all desired to be rich, we all proclaimed it. I have since wondered why the distribution of wealth is not uniform. Why does less than 20% of the earth own more than 80% of it’s resources. I asked deep questions, I read many books, listened to many speakers and finally got an answer I was comfortable with.

The Almighty bequits wealth to those he can entrust with it. To those who he knows can take care of the others. Those he knows will allow the money to flow. Money is called currency, because it’s supposed to flow like a current, the purpose of money was never for accumulation. It is not coincidence that the richest men in the world are also the most philantropic. The man with clenched fists gives none and gets none. The art of giving puts the hand in the right position to receive.  It’s so hard to compress these thoughts into one post, I’ll review this again later. These are just fundamental principles to help support what I have in mind to make a regular feature on this forum. Together can pull funds together, and make a world of difference in people’s lives. We’ll call it Extreme Makeover - Mini Edition. We’ll start with doing it monthly, then we’ll do it weekly…and then perhaps more. When we take care of the poor, we do the lords work, I like the way John F Kennedy puts it,

“Let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on Earth God’s work must truly be our own.”-JFK

Find below, the modus operandi for Extreme Makeover - Mini Edition, your role, my role and our roles.

Modus Operandi

At the beginning of everymonth, we’ll be expected to be more vigilant of the people around us. We will to nominate people that this little gift will radically transform. In our nominations, the key thoughts are - “Does this person have something doing already that this amount will very useful for?”, “Is there a skill without an avenue to express it?”, “Will we be able to measure progress?”, “Does this person deserve this big break, does he have a generous disposition with the little he/she has?”

When we have collated all this “reason backed nominations”, we will also together go through all of them, and nominate a few to be further interviewed, this way, we can come up with the person to makeover for the month.

Once we agree on the amount + or - this range that is suitable for the nominated recipient, we then go ahead to pull the funds together, and present it to the recipient. My expectation is that somewhere down the line, as we all grow, we will increase the figures, and the quality of our interventions.

Together with my team, we will make sure that we keep you up to date on the progress that this people have made based on our little token invested in their lives. I have no doubts that we will be raising much more than we need per time. We will put the left over from each makeover into an “Angel Account”, every month as well, we will be having a feature where we’ll get someone to go to a few hospitals, to bail someone out whom this token sum means the key out of the grips of death. Think about it, people die in this country in our hospitals because someone cannot afford N20,000. We will find people like this, and keep you in touch with what your money is doing.

As I write this, I feel tears welling up into my eyes. I believe the best use of creativity is to provide solutions for the benefit of another. I believe the best life, is that lived in the service of others. I’m so willing to do this all on my own, but I know I can’t be alone in this.

With this post, I hereby officially launch, Extreme Makeover-Mini Edition, and our very own Angel Network. I don’t believe we need to be big before doing big things. I believe that little drops of water, make the mighty ocean. I believe that 1+1, can do 10times more than 1. Let me know if you’ll like to be a part of this, I have come to discover that not all good things are for everyone.

“The purpose of making money, is giving it away creatively” - By the actions of Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. (2nd and 1st Richest men in the world)

  5. Tunne responds:

Count me in. Its an idea that has often crossed my mind. When I listen to the news and hear someone needs 1Million for medical treatment, I immediately begin to imagine that if jst 10,000 people can donate 100 naira each…that person’s problem is solved. I mean, its just as simple as that. Its not even about expecting something back in return for helping others, its just the right thing to do. For all those who will be reading this article, i urge you to subscribe to this noble ideal. You will find fulfilment in doing this…make no mistake about this.

  6. Emog responds:

Great idea Chief, when do we kick off the program? I’m very interested in giving back all that has been invested in me and helping those in need.

    “Provisions follow visions”

  7. fola responds:

    hi deolu,

i am really touched by the fact that such a scheme mostly seen on american and uk tv could actually come to birth in Nigeria, and all it took was for someone with the heart of God to take a step. it would be nice to see it really take off and gain momentum. However, if there are other ways to contribute other that financially (mentoring etc), i would love to help.

i look forward to seeing and reading the success stories and being able to contribute financially in the near future.

  8. nike responds:

There are a lot of people out there that will really benefit from this venture and one can never know one, of these persons that will benefit might just be a friend, brother, cousin etc. one can never tell.

  13. Adeolu Akinyemi responds:

    @ All,

What can I say, I think our team is forming already. And believe me, it’s not in the numbers… it’s in the commitment, and I feel a strong commitment from you folks already.

Nike - Yes… you have the role. You can do the checking over weekends. I’ll get someone to check during the week. You might need a camera, if you have great, if not, we can provide you with one.

… I think we should start immediately by populating this place with the short stories of people you have seen that we can help already, and like Tunne said, it’s not about what we get in return, we are blessed to bless.

Please count me in also, even though i don’t live in Nigeria but i must not miss out this. I will need details of a bank account where i can be sending my token to as often as God give me grace.

  43. ade responds:

This is a noble suggestion. For once it is not HYIP.
Criticism are good, they help us get better.
Let us know the details. It pains my heart to see people suffer and perish when few of us can come together and save those souls.
Lets come together and make this world a better place.

  47. Godwin responds:

  48. Olubanker responds:

thank God , no HYIP !!!!!,

COUNT ME IN !!!!!, let me do something noble for once

  49. Peter responds:

    @Ade,
At least, i’m very happy that the message of this post touched your heart somehow and you’ve showed interest but i disagreed with your phrase ‘For once it is not HYIP’.
It amused me that you wrote this despite your awareness of so many other posts which are not HYIP related. Perhaps, you are not aware check the archives, locate these subjects ‘Defining Success for you’, ‘Who have you Believed’, ‘I wept’ and tell us how related these ones are to HYIP.
Also, be not deceived to think that the current post is a bye product of your so called criticism, far from it. This is a message of the hour, borne out of divine inspiration, a revelation of passion not mere criticism and that is why so many people has been responding positively and promptly, it has been confirmed in their hearts, so i believe it is much more than a noble suggestion but a deeper call to one of the reasons why we are alive and blessed.
So my friend let’s flow together with this one since you are interested, i look forward to hearing of your bountiful gift and continous commitment, God bless you.

  50. Femi responds:

Nice one Deolu, the best idea anyone has come up with this year. I reckon discretely investigating people and then blessing them works for me better than interview. of course, you must’ve given carefull thought to this but hey remember the parable of the sower? some will be fruitful while some will definately fall on bad soils. that, careful as you may be you can not help. besides the element of surprise still encourages hard work. no one knows who will be next, hope you catch my drift. I am keen to be part of this lets have the modalities.
    Much respect bro……………………. Femi

  51. Ade responds:

    @Peter

Na wa.Each time i talk you always seem to reply my comments.Do you work closely with Deolu or take it upon yourself to defend the poor man?
I hope there is someone called Peter and not a case of the Voice Of Jacob but the body of Esau.
Keep me updated as am interested in gestures like this.
Dont get me wrong,i appreciate what Deolu does but as humans we can make mistakes once in a while and need people to put us back on track.

  52. Peter Oluokun responds:

    @Ade,
Goodday to you, thanks for your response, i feel your heart a bit better now. I’m a real person ,that’s why i added my surname.
Since you want to know, i don’t work close with Deolu infact i don’t live in Nigeria anymore neither do i just choose to defend him, it is just what i felt in my heart to comment about ,which i also think will of good to readers too.
I’ve known Deolu for over 8years now because i also graduated from OAU the same department with him but i’ve not seen him physically since he graduated, i’m sure he doesn’t even know me personally, but i do and i admire him in so many ways. He has been a selfless public leader, very intelligent (tutorial teacher of difficult faculty courses for years), a big fellowship bible study leader ( i’ve been blessed by his teachings), President departmental association e.t.c. After he graduated i’ve been hearing of the great and exemplary things he has been doing till date.
So i can feel his heart, i can interprete his passion, i can perceive his vision and mission, this helps me understand his blog posts the more.

Ade, perhaps you don’t know him beyond what you read on this blog, it will be good to try to know him personally, sorry for taking your time, just to gist you a little., i do appreciate you too, cheers.

    @ALL,
my sincere apologies for this digression, i just want to get my heart across to Ade, God bless you all.

  53. Kayode responds:

    @Deolu,

    That’s a powerful idea.

I’ll definitely like to be part of it.
I hope you are going to put up another post soon, with more details regarding contributions and participation in the programme when all the ideas have been put together.

@All, i’m really happy to see many people agree with the idea. Just want to remind us all to truely donate from the heart. It’s not how much we give but how much love we put in the giving that matters in the end.

This is indeed one of the best posts you have made Deolu. Keep it up.

  54. 'Sola Adeyinka responds:

Deolu I have always known you to have amazing ideas. you have shown it again that you not just after money but you want to be a solution to people’s problems. Though i’m a student i wont mind being part of, because what i waste some people lack and what i lack some people waste. cheers

  55. Aanu Adepoju responds:

    Deolu,

    Great idea.
    Thank you for it.

Would love to collaborate in this.
I can imagine there was no chance to mention this at Ile-oluji when we saw, this last weekend.

Keep up the good work broh.
and let’s get it started, for real.

  56. Adeg responds:

    I am with you. 100%.

I think the next stage should be proper inauguration, or most importantly getting a separate account we can pay into on the monthly basis…….

  57. skybaba responds:

While listening to O.G Onazi’s Monday night program called REACH OUT, during Ray-Power FM’s early days, there’s one song she plays everytime. Ohh…how I loved the words of the song. It says:

    ============================

Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Heart
Make this world a Better, If you can

    ============================

Believe me, we can all make Nigeria a better place by keying into this idea Deolu just came up with.
The Angel Network………..I sure like the sound of that!!!

I’ve been nursing something similar for some years now, but mine has been more in the direction of Widows and single moms (probable because of my background); and also Prisoners [believe me, this has nothing to do with my background :-) ].

My people I would definitely like to be a part of this in my own little way.
Please let us know how it will operate.

    @ Deolu

Could I advise that you should not place a minimum amount on it so as to allow all and sundry participate.

    THE LORD IS YOUR STRENGTH!!!!!!

    skybaba

  58. skybaba responds:

    on a lighter note;

We can express what we’ve learnt from the HYIPs here ;-)
“How” you may ask. Well Deolu can set a target of hom much the Angel Network wants to raise for a particular project/period, and until the amount is realised, we stay in that period and call it AN OPERATIONAL WEEK!! :-) ;-) :-)

Don’t crucify me, remember I started by saying “on a lighter note” :-)

    Take care everyone!!!!!

  59. nike responds:

    @ Deolu
I will be coming for the 6k4u seminar on sunday so we can really discuss about your plans for this charitable work.

Am 100% game, please people don’t let work stress deter you from joining.
Remember it is always better to give and what better way to bring people to christ. Jesus gave his life for us, what have we as children of God given to the people around us, our friends, relations, community and Nigeria as a whole.

Give and it shall come back to you, good measures press down shaking together and running over.

    God bless Nigeria.

  60. Omar responds:

    @ Deolu and all
….The liberal soul shall be made fat and he that watereth shall be watered…..
    You are all blessed.
    I’ll be glad to join.

  61. dayo responds:

just saw this post, been away for a bit….am really interested, i have for some time been wondering about those people whom a mere 10,000 or 20,000 would make a huge difference to their lives and this is definitely the way to go…….people dont even have to be rich to do this…God will certainly reward every CHEERFUL giver
    pl count me in

  62. Tejumade Nwafor responds:

another foot soldier signing in.. im a business woman with lots of flexible time on my hands. ive also got a camera and a womens prayer network currently doing the same thing though on a smaller scale.

we’d love to be part of this. pray tell , how can we join.

  63. Oluwadare responds:

I’m in. When do we start?

    God bless YOU

  64. Felix responds:

Chairman, you never cease to amaze the world and God will continue to bring such blessing thru you as you have made yourself available. i think we could do the Bill Gates and Warren buffet stuff … ;)

@Niyibankz … you can say that again, watch out Oprah, here comes Deolu.

@All, this is a great opportunity to be a vessel unto God’s honor, let join hands together and make it happen.

  65. lateef responds:

hi deolu, keep up the good work.may God bless you abundantly.
let us know how we can contribute to the success of this scheme.
our limit is beyond the sky.

  66. Derek Nwafor responds:

    Hi Deolu,

My first time chipping in here. (Bell of blessing, anyone?) It’s a great thing to start, plus it can grow in many ways.

We are with you. Let’s have further details.

    Derek Nwafor

  67. Olanrewaju O LEWIS responds:

    @Nike and ALL

Let that Three Word Phrase begin to reverberate on our lips anywhere in the Globe we find ourselves.

    GOD BLESS NIGERIA

This is a worthy project that can go beyond the shores of our land if we get it right…I don’t know if we can see this now….but in due time, the Angel Network would become a multinational influential organization because GOD can’t deny Himself.

    Cheers

  68. Josh responds:

    Chairman,

The ball is not only in your court now, it’s in your hand, please lead us ahead, as you can see many people are willing and ready to go.

I think we should start putting the funds together pending when we will decide on which project to start with. Let’s also have an account where people can always pay money into when they are liquid and willing. This account should be managed by people with impecable integrity.

See you all at the TOP!!!

  70. Larry responds:

    Hi Deolu,

Nice project. It makes me weep when i see many people suffering and cannot afford to go to the hospitals for treatment.

How do i make my own contribution.

Cheers and keep up the good work.

  71. Philip responds:

This is a great idea. Pls let us know when to start.

  72. FI responds:

Great idea from a great mind.
We’re solidly in on this one.

  73. Adeolu Akinyemi responds:

Wow… I’m really impressed with the turnout of these. I’m so happy that we have many of us that are willing to put smiles on others faces. LETs START NOW. I’ll start by posting a story - immediately after this comment, we can feel free to use this as a template. We’ll allow for 10 of such this month, and then privately investigate a the ones we want to support and go ahead. I think we should start it roughly and perfect as we go on. You can add the story of anyone you know we can help down here, using a similar template. The story will be in the post after this.

I’m really happy to be in the company of people like you.

    Cheers

    Adeolu

    @deolu
i dont have a camera but i can always get one.
    @ all
I was watching newsline some sundays ago and they did a piece on those people that need operations and in order to raise money for the operation, they have to stay on top of busy bridges in lagos. I got to find out that some of them do not need operations that cost millions of naira to recover, there was one man, i cant remember the particular amount but the cost of his operation was not up to 100k.
These are people some of us see everyday on our way to work, why don’t we start with such people.
Also i hope we have doctors in the house who can help us to know real cases and fraudsters.

    God bless Nigeria

  80. Oyinade Akanbi responds:

    Hi Deolu,

You have such a giving heart and such great ideas.
I have always desired to be a blessing to the less privileged but in my busy busy schedule i have not been able to achieve much in this area. I get so moved each time i see the needy especially those who are so sick and do not have the funds to take of themselves.
I agree very much with Nike that we could start with those we see every day on our streets.
Please count me in and keep me informed.
    You are blessed.
    Oyin

    Great day to you ALL!!!

    Greater day to you DEOLU!!!

    Greatest day to NIGERIANS/AFRICANS

EXTREME MAKEOVER-Mini Editon is long over due. I am glad “Arole OLORIOKO” is championering the course. I am in 100%;financially and all that it takes.

However, as usual, i have slightly different line of thots. Inasmuch as we have good intention to better the life of people around us;within and beyond our reach, we must get committed toward moving to the strata of the society where there is large pull of resoureces and appropiate authority. i mean POLITICS;act of governnace.

PETER OBI is a current and real testament. More are yet to heard about him. I learnt he was doing what DEOLU is doing now since his days in the school, during his active career days and and the entry to REAL POLITICKING.

nepa don carry light, my ups will off now, i post concludinn 2moro………

  85. credoke responds:

I am impressed, irrespective of motive. But there must be a stucture.Do not fill your commitee with “names” who chair occasions yet will make irredeemable pledges but rather look to all who have responded via this medium and watch them grow this dream.
I have certain resources at my disposal and will be willing to put them to your use once the Angel Network is fully established-I can render assistance in formalising/legalising the “foundation”.
Contact me through this medium and we will see how to proceed in an effective manner.
I will endeavour to check this site again next week under this heading.

…a generous man will prosper ,he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

    @Dee,

By all means… I’ll like to communicate further with you on how you intend to support in formalizing… We can do a lot more if we all handle what comes natural with us. Thanks for offering yourself, and thanks to everyone as well.

  90. bebe responds:

wat else can i say, gone thru all the comments so far and all has been said already, but pple are really suffering in our country and we really need God’s help and each others help as well.i saw a man begging sometimes last yr at CMS and the wound on his body was obviously not a make up,it was so real such that (tho i felt like throwing up)i was really crying for the guy and pple were forced to give him as much as thousands right in the public bus,it was a pitiable sight.
And wn the issue of 10%vat and fuel increase came up,i once again felt for the poor, the less priviledge, pple that even without that increase they cant afford to pay medical fees or send thier children to skol.
my fiance normally says smthing, that it takes courage to come out and beg (tho not in all cases)in most cases it takes gut and swallowing of pride for someone sick to get out of hospital bed on to a wheel chair and start begging, cos his living depends on it.
we that have a roof over our head, that have fud on our table, that av watever little it is to spend dont know wat we av,we really need to reach out to pple.
deolu i’m 100% interested in it.
    GOD BLESS NIGERIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  95. Deji Okanlawon responds:

Great one, I am certain we will through this platform fufil the dreams some of us have of impacting our world. We may n ot all be Adeolu Akinyemi, But we can be vehicles of transformation, agents of change, men of valour and much more men who will show our leaders and govt that there are certain ways to cater for the less privileged in our society. We will live this dream!!!!

  96. Chris O. Owojori responds:

    Great day to you ALL.

As i was i saying/writting b4 been interrupted by d greatest enemy Nigerians/Nigeria has. We must all face the fact that we need resources (money or non-money) to solve the problems around us. The resources are in short supply outside goverment houses. They are thier in the the Government Houses(Federal,States&Locals); i stand to be challange by FIRS/PTDF/Finance Ministry.. I admit that getting there is a challenging route; but we must get there. This is as getting a job/entering higher institutions for those who has not gotten them. If you have overcome these two challanges of life, you will understand me better.

Most people i read thier comment on this site are endowed with the latter resources(non-money). Deolu is is too much loaded with them. Put 1billion in his charge, boundless is what he will do with it. So also is many young Nigerians i met all daily basis.

MY POINT: It is an appeal!!! Let start building ourselves for political responsibilities. We would do more been in the Government houses than we would do with our little hard earned resources. What matter most is our intension. Justice is becoming ALIVE in Nigeria; let take up the oppurtunities and more people out hospitals, minimise roads accident, facilitates good and quality education, ensure 3 meals per days for average Nigerians, ensure availabilty of POWER for economy to be ran efficiently.

We will get. I am sure i will and hope you will jion me.

Deolu pls get in touch. 08056447636.

Josh , pls expect my call.

GREAT DAY. use strike time to read that book waiting so long on the shelve.

  97. Demmy responds:

    Deolu,
You just entered a new phase of wealth in your life. God has surely decided to make you a world financial power. This that you have started doing, is the seed of enduring wealth, even to your 4th generation.
I am really moved by this initiative of yours,it is the very essence of being rich. This are the kind of things that we distinguish us(Godly multi-billionaires) in times to come..
I’m into some things right now,but will get in touch with you in person very soon. I’m game all the way.
God bless you real heavily my brother.
